Lower Cholesterol Naturally & Prevent Heart Disease

lower cholesterol naturallyWe asked Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn, M.D. how to lower cholesterol naturally.

His answers are shocking. There are multiple civilizations with zero heart disease yet they never worry about their cholesterol.

Why is that?

Today he shares how he helps patients prevent and reverse heart disease through these very specific dietary changes.

Lower Cholesterol Naturally Video Interview:

The 4 cultures he references in this interview have absolutely zero heart disease.

  1. Papua Highlanders of New Guinea,
  2. People in central Africa,
  3. Tarahumara Indians of northern Mexico, and
  4. Inhabitants of rural China (Reference: Cornell China Study),

Other Western diseases like hypertension, obesity, and adult-onset diabetes are virtually non-existent there.

Why is that?

Because they are not eating in a way that injures their endothelial lining.

We’ll get to that shortly, but first…

Why Your Body Needs Cholesterol to Survive

prevent heart disease dietCholesterol is an absolutely essential molecule in the human body.

  1. It makes up the membrane of every cell in our body
  2. It’s the basis for our sex hormones, and
  3. It’s used to make Vitamin D

So it’s a pretty valuable commodity.

Whoever put the human body together gave the liver the responsibility for making it.

Even no-cholesterol vegan foods are turned into cholesterol by the liver.

How to Reduce Your Cholesterol Naturally

You want to reduce the amount you eat.

That doesn’t usually amount to much.

The foods that contain cholesterol are always animal products.

Dr. Esselstyn found that when his patients eliminate:

  • Meat
  • Dairy, and
  • Oils

That their cholesterol seems to drop significantly as well.

So when you eliminate animal products like meat/dairy and oil, he says “I think you’re going to find your cholesterol is going to really plummet.”

What Other Foods Cause Your Cholesterol to Rise?

Even after being vegan for 3 years, I was diagnosed with high cholesterol and triglycerides.

So when I reflect on my diet, there’s the oil and other things like sugar that pasta that may have contributed to it as well.

He’s had some patients who have had a nice profound drop when they’ve eliminated the grain.

In other words, their energy food for a while was potatoes.

But then they can reintroduce the grain one at a time and see which one may be the culprit for raising their cholesterol.

How Quickly Can You Reduce Cholesterol Naturally?

Within 2 weeks he’s seen a 30 or 40 milligrams per deciliter drop in a cholesterol when they stopped the grain.

As we said before cholesterol is an integral part of every cell in our body and it’s not a bad thing.

And when you think about it, this is going to all come down to heart disease.

The cultures we’ve mentioned before have very little concern about their cholesterol.

If that cholesterol is 180 or 200. They never have heart disease. Why?

They never have heart disease because they all thrive on whole food plant based nutrition.

The Role of Nitric Oxide in Preventing Heart Disease:

how to lower cholesterol on a wfpb dietThey are not eating in a way that injures their endothelial lining.

All those endothelial cells are making a gas called nitric oxide. It is nitric oxide that’s responsible for the salvation and the protection of all your blood vessels.

When we eat foods that destroy our endothelial capacity to make nitric oxide…

Now we’re losing our protection from making blockages and plaque.

Nitric oxide has these wonderful functions.

Because nitric oxide does what?

First of all, it keeps all those cellular elements within our bloodstream flowing smoothly, like Teflon rather than Velcro.

Number two, nitric oxide is the strongest blood vessels dilate in the body.

When you climb stairs the arteries to your legs and to your heart widen and dilate. That’s nitric oxide.

Number three, nitric oxide will protect the wall of the artery from becoming thick and stiff or inflamed. It will protect us from getting high blood pressure or hypertension.

Number four, the key – nitric oxide in a normal amount will protect us all from ever developing blockages and plaque.

What Causes Cardiovascular Disease?

plant based doctorsSo literally everybody on the planet Earth. If they have cardiovascular disease…

It is because by now in the previous decades, they have so sufficiently trashed, injured, compromised and turned their endothelial system into a train wreck.

They no longer have enough nitric oxide to protect themselves from making blockages and plaque.

However, the good news is that this is not a malignancy.

This is a benign foodborne illness.

And once you can get patients with heart disease to never again pass anything through their lips that is going to further destroy an already train wrecked endothelium…

Their endothelial recovers and makes enough nitric oxide so we can not only halt disease progression, but we often will see significant elements of disease reversal.

Why Vegans Get Heart Disease

There is a reason why Dr. Esselstyn never uses the word Vegan in his book.

He treats vegetarians and vegans all the time with heart disease.

  • Vegans eat French fries.
  • They also eat oil.
  • What about Vegan glazed donuts?

vegan donutsIf somebody doesn’t have heart disease and they are vegan; they probably are going to protect themselves.

But sometimes patients who are vegans won’t develop their disease until they’re in their 60s or 70s.

They don’t have to have that happen.

So that’s when you make the transition from vegan to Whole Foods Plant Based.

“Whole Foods Plant Based nutrition, that’s what we use for our patients.”

– Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn, M.D.

Can I Cheat on This Diet Once in a While?

caldwell esselstynDiets can be difficult and you might be tempted to cheat once in a while.

But when Dr. Esselstyn has a patient with heart disease staring him in the face, he says to them…

“The reason you have your heart disease in the first place is because you have so trashed your endothelial cells. You no longer have enough nitric oxide to protect yourself. And you’re asking me, if every weekend, two days a week, that’s 104 days out of the year. You’re asking me if you can continue it continue to destroy your endothelial cells further? Absolutely not!”

His goal is to not only stop disease but to have disease reversal whenever we can.

Is There a Genetic Aspect of Lower Cholesterol?

What happens to an Okinawan if they move to the U.S. and eat the Western diet?

They get heart disease, right? From the processed foods in supermarkets or the lack of plant-based foods in restaurants.

So the emphasis should not be how much of the Western diet can I eat and still get a safe cholesterol? That doesn’t work.

is cholesterol geneticYou can drive your cholesterol down into a safe range with drugs. But if you’re still eating the food that every time it passes your lips, you’re going to damage your endothelial cells. That doesn’t work.

Have the Statin drugs been the salvation of this disease? They’ve been around for well over 20 years, right? And what’s the number one killer of women and men in western civilization? Heart Disease!

In Western medicine they don’t treat the root cause.

They usually just address the symptoms.

How to Lower Triglycerides Naturally

If your triglycerides are high, you want to be sure you eliminate all the simple carbohydrates.

To lower triglycerides, avoid things like:

  1. Excess fruit
  2. Fructose
  3. Candy
  4. Cakes
  5. Pies
  6. Cookies
  7. White flour
  8. White rice

plant based dietYou just want to stay away from the simple carbohydrates.

The other thing you can add that helps lower triglycerides is some Amla powder. It’s from the gooseberry.

Try that one half teaspoon a day. Just mix with cereal.

After this interview, I switched white rice for brown rice and quinoa. I also began adding flax and chia seeds to my meals.

Benefits of Whole Foods Plant Based Nutrition

If you want to protect yourself from the #1 killer of women and men in western civilization, plant based nutrition will do it.

And the exciting thing is, there are side effects.

  • You get rid of diabetes
  • Hypertension
  • The risk for stroke
  • The risk for vascular dementia
  • Get rid of ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease
  • Rheumatoid arthritis and lupus
  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Allergies
  • Asthma

wfpb nutritionI mean, the benefits that come from whole food plant based nutrition.

It’s the seismic revolution in health.

The seismic revolution in health will never come about with the invention of another pill, another procedure, or another operation.

The seismic revolution in a health will come about when those in the medical profession have the will, grit, and, determination to share with the public…

The nutritional literacy that will empower them as the locus of control to absolutely annihilate chronic illness.

We can do that with Whole Foods Plant-Based nutrition.

Why Do Many Doctors Prescribe Pills First?

vegan dietThe only way is to educate them.

Sadly, doctors don’t get enough education about plant-based nutrition in medical schools.

Five years ago Dr. Esselstyn was invited to American College of Cardiology’s nutrition committee.

What is the job of the nutrition committee of the American College of Cardiology?

Primarily its to educate cardiologists about the causation of the illness that they’ve been designated to treat.

Because cardiologists sadly, in their medical school training, and in their postgraduate training never received really any significant information about nutrition.

And that’s really got to stop because pills and procedures have nothing whatsoever to do with the causation of the illness.

You see, really, when you think about it, ever since the days of Hippocrates, there’s been a basic covenant of trust between the caregiver and the patient.

That whenever possible, the caregiver will share with the patient what is the causation of the illness.

And sadly today in cardiovascular medicine, that’s not being done.

Can You Get Adequate Nutrition on a Lower Cholesterol Diet?

‚ÄčThis is a common concern.

There is one supplement you should take.

A physician named Bill Connor went down to northern Mexico and studied the Tarahumara Indians.

They primarily eat three types of food: Beans, corn, and squash. No nutritional deficiencies. Not even B12.

Every plant-based medical health professional I spoke to recommends that we take a B12 supplement while eating a plant-based diet.

You see, here in the Western world we are super hygienic. Always washing our hands and sanitizing food.

If you are eating food from the dirt, you’re getting the microorganisms that make B12.

Other deficiencies are not as much as a concern, especially.

Dr. Esselstyn never saw a patient have to go to the emergency room because they were protein deficient.

Other resources include the movies Forks Over Knives (and their website), The Game Changers, and you can search for him on YouTube, you’ll see several of his presentations, maybe an hour long or so forth.

Thank you so much for sticking through this interview to the end.

And this was a really eye opening interview for me because I went into it talking about how to lower cholesterol naturally on a vegan plant based diet, or what foods lower cholesterol.

But what I learned through the process is there’s a lot more going on inside of our bodies that contribute to the underlying fear that we have, which is getting heart disease.

Information is one thing.

What you do with it is what really counts.
